Global greats take on Tosca in International Eisteddfod ‘first’

World-class performance of Tosca to headline Tuesday evening concert at Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod

Global headliners Sir Bryn Terfel, Kristine Opolais and Kristian Benedikt are to share the stage for the very first time to deliver a unique rendition of Puccini’s Tosca at this year’s Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod.

A dramatic love story set against a backdrop of lust, political intrigue and murder, this performance by three of the opera world’s most admired talents takes place on Tuesday 4 July, one of the highlights of a week of quality entertainment that will see audiences treated to award-winning Classical and Jazz and Soul concerts and contemporary headline acts.

The Tosca trio will be accompanied by the acclaimed Welsh National Opera Orchestra.

Much-loved Welsh bass-baritone Sir Bryn Terfel returns to the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in the role of Baron Scarpia who is in pursuit of Benedikt’s Cavaradossi.

Taking the title role, Opolais brings a rare dynamism to Tosca and will help create a never-to-be-repeated performance, which will be conducted by Gareth Jones.

Music Director of the Llangollen Eisteddfod, Eilir Griffiths, said: “Building on the success of Carmen and Sweeney Todd, this is another adventurous project for the Eisteddfod to undertake. Under the direction of Amy Lane the production will include stunning video work and subtle staging to bring this wonderful opera to life.

“Through combining the excellence and expertise of Welsh and international talent, the country’s intrinsic talent is showcased on the worldwide stage, ensuring the Llangollen Eisteddfod remains relevant and fresh year on year. “

Talented boy sopranos or trebles are being offered an opportunity to join the cast of this exclusive performance in the role of ‘Shepherd Boy’.

Open auditions will be held for young hopefuls on Saturday 15th April at the Royal International Pavilion. Candidates will be asked to perform two pieces – “I give you sighs” from Tosca, Act 3 and one of their own choosing.

Pendine Park proprietor Mario Kreft MBE said: “We are delighted to be sponsoring this performance of Tosca, which I am sure will be a magical experience, given the stellar array of operatic talent.

“The festival is particularly close to our hearts. Music and the arts are an important part of our enrichment programme and we genuinely believe that they improve the quality of life of our residents at our Wrexham and Caernarfon care homes.

“It’s promising to be a truly unforgettable evening of world class opera, right on our doorstep starring our very own Sir Bryn Terfel – it’s going to be a very special night and one not to be missed.

“Later in the week on Thursday, July 6, Sir Bryn and Pendine Park will be joining forces again for the Voice of the Future Competition in a bid to find the world’s best young singers when the finalists will be competing for the Pendine Trophy and a cheque for £6,000 – we’re excited to see what talent will be discovered!”
