Biography: The British Columbia Girls Choir was started in 2004 and is based in Metro Vancouver, offering a progressive system of choral training for singers ages six to young adult.
The Choir’s mandate may be encapsulated in their mission statement of just eight words, in that they aim to: give voice, change lives and create extraordinary music.
In the past 14 years, hundreds of girls have not just been ‘given a voice’ with vocal training, they have sung together to give voice to issues that affect young people and girls in particular, such as: anti-bullying campaigns, kids’ crisis phone lines, lupus (a disease which affects primarily women), wildfire relief (2017 was a devastating fire season in BC), foodbanks, and shelters for women.
Each year, over 150 singers participate in concerts, recordings, festivals, camps and numerous community outreach events.
In Canada, the choir has been a finalist in the National Festival of Music for numerous years. Other highlights, over the years, have included: singing at the Winter Olympics; appearing on television; being awarded the top prize for the best performance of a Canadian work at the renowned International Choral Kathaumixw.
So all in all whenever and wherever the girls travel, they love to represent their country and share their music and look forward to represent their choir at the Llangollen Eisteddfod.
