  • WALES PLAYS BRAZIL – TUESDAY 4th JULY 

Twenty years after he recorded his celebrated album, “Wales Plays Brazil”, featuring tenor sax star Dave O’Higgins, guitarist Trefor Owen has put together this exciting Latin-flavoured quintet which revisits a number of his own original lyrical compositions from the CD plus some well-chosen standards by composers like Antonio Carlos Jobim, including ‘Wave’ and  ‘One Note Samba’. This time around Trefor, who has performed extensively in the USA and is widely considered to be Wales’ premiere jazz guitarist, will be joined by Liam Byrne (tenor sax), Andy Hulme (guitar), Ed Harrison (d bass) and Hugh Lawrence on assorted Latin percussion.

  • SUE PARISH QUINTET PLAYS THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK – WEDNESDAY 5th JULY

A spellbinding vocalist, Sue Parish has been performing around the Northwest for some twenty years, developing a wide repertoire of classic and lesser known jazz standards epitomized by composers such as George Gershwin, Cole Porter, and Jerome Kern. A thoughtful and thought-provoking singer, Sue has forged musical relationships with many of the finest musicians of the region, including her special front-line guest, renowned tenor saxophonist Dean Masser, whose big-toned, hard-swinging style earns him great acclaim wherever he performs. Completing this first class ensemble is Paul Kilvington (keyboards), Frank Grime (double bass)

  • THE BROWNFIELD BYRNE QUINTET: NEW ORLEANS TO NEW YORK – THURSDAY 6th JULY

Co-led by two of Wales’ top young jazz musicians, The Brownfield Byrne Quintet brings a fresh approach to standards and bebop favourites from the Blue Note era of the 40s and 50s as well as some choice material from the swinging 30s. Saxophonist

Liam Byrne has established himself as a torchbearer of the tenor saxophone and bebop tradition, while Jamie Brownfield (trumpet), whose playing is steeped in the spirit of New Orleans, is a past winner of the Rising Star category at the British Jazz Awards.   • ANDRZEJ BARANEK QUARTET, FEATURING KYRAN MATTHEWS (SAX) – FRIDAY 7th JULY

A swinging, edgy and inventive pianist who many jazz fans will recognise as a member of the renowned Magic Hat Ensemble, Andrzej Baranek (keyboards) has performed with UK jazz stars including Dave O’Higgins and Enrico Tomasso and now leads this outstanding quartet which features Frank Grime (double bass), Hugh Lawrence (drums), plus special guest Kyran Matthews. Kyran, a world-class saxophonist and prize-winning graduate of the Royal Northern College of Music, has toured throughout Europe and South Africa with many acclaimed bands, including the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Great Britain.

  • SARAH BARNWELL QUARTET: GYPSY JAZZ A LA GOT CLUB DE FRANCE AND MORE – SATURDAY 8th JULY

The Sarah Barnwell Quartet is an exciting, violin-led outfit that plays jazz with authentic passion, fire and virtuosity, keeping alive the spirit of the great Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli with classic numbers like Cherokee, Puttin’ on the Ritz and  Limehouse Blues. An award-winning violinist, Sarah has performed across Europe and Canada and has made many appearances for the BBC as a session musician. Joining Sarah is the stunning Huw Warren (accordion), a versatile musician who performs all over the world as an internationally acclaimed pianist.
