Sonomento

Biography: Sonomento is MacPhail’s premiere adult choral ensemble, a 40-member auditioned chamber choir that specializes in performing the great classical choral works, past and present. The group has become an ambassador for MacPhail’s adult education program and performs regularly around the Twin Cities, often collaborating with other choirs and orchestras. Under musical director Craig Fields, artistic excellence has become their top priority as well as a strong emphasis on creating lasting friendships among its members. Sonomento has performed major works by Bach, Vivaldi, Mozart, Beethoven, Vaughan Williams, Britten, Bernstein, Menotti and more. As each singer’s vocalism and musicianship improves, the power and beauty of the choir’s tone is enhanced.  The resulting sound is lustrous and strong – capable of wide dynamic contrast, clear diction and a full spectrum of emotional colour. Toward this end, they follow the choral model of the Robert Shaw Chorale and Westminster Choir College, utilizing well-trained, large classical voices as section leaders in order to produce a full, mature sound with vibrato. In 2013, the choir served as the opera chorus for Minnesota Concert Opera’s production of Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana. In 2015, the choir visited Munich, Berlin and Prague and garnered two competitive Silver Medals at the International Brahms Choral Festival in Wernigerode, Germany.
