The Friends of the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod, or FLIME as it has become known, was started in 1974 by Michael Fay and other members of the Eisteddfod Publicity Committee to support the Eisteddfod. As a result of its work, donations have been made to the Eisteddfod's funds each year, allowing the purchase of equipment ranging from seats to computers, speakers to security cameras, and also supporting the archive project. More recently, support has been given to Competitors from poorer parts of the worl to help with the expense of their stays in Llangollen for the Eisteddfod.
Friends have come from all over the world. The Friends have supported the Eisteddfod for over 35 years. Over this time £350,000 has been contributed. This is expected to increase significantly in the future.
Friends are a Registered Charity, distinct from the Eisteddfod itself. Subscription rates for the Friends are set at a level so that anyone who is interested may join. These subscription rates are minimum rates and many members generously pay a lot more. Many members also significantly increase the value of their subscription by paying by GIFT AID allowing their tax to be reclaimed.
