Biography:
Chapel en le Frith Male Voice Choir is one of the oldest male choirs in the country, located in Chapel en le Frith, a small town in the Peak District, a scenic national park in central England, but lies only 25 miles from Manchester. It was formed in 1918 by young men returning from the First World War.
For the last 100 years it has been part of the community providing concerts and entertainment throughout the region, bringing local men together, inspiring and uniting them with the joy of singing and at the same time raising thousands of pounds for charitable causes.
It is a friendly choir with a strong sense of camaraderie and fellowship which welcomes men of all ages and all walks of life. No experience is necessary to join the choir, all that’s required is a love of singing!
The choir has around 40 members and rehearses once a week in a church in nearby Dove Holes. It normally provides between 6 and 10 concerts per year as well as performing at weddings, funerals and other private events.
In the past the choir has taken part in joint concerts as far afield as Atlanta, Georgia USA and the Royal Albert Hall in London and more recently has taken part in choir festivals in the UK and Italy.
The choir’s music director is James Hibbert a local man with a keen interest in music from an early age. James joined the choir as a singing member at the age of 18 accompanying his grandfather who was a member for over 50 years.
Subsequently James became director of a church choir in Stockport and took over as our MD in 2024. James’ youthful and enthusiastic approach is helping the choir to evolve in the 21st century.
