Scrumdiddlyumptious event celebrates children’s author

Fantastic Mr Fox, Willy Wonka, Matilda and her nemesis Miss Trunchball all had a role to play as the Llangollen International Eisteddfod celebrated a Roald Dahl-themed Children’s Day.

The scrumdiddlyumptious event was organised to celebrate the centenary of the birth of the Welsh-born literary genius and also saw the conclusion of a Denbighshire Schools Takeovers 2016 project. (more…)

How do you solve a problem like a marimba – just ask Merle

How do you solve a problem like marimba – that’s been one of the headaches for Merle Hunt at this week’s Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod.

A marimba is a giant, eight-foot long percussion instrument weighing over 350 pounds and finding one and a home for it was the tricky question facing retired schools inspector Merle, Overseas Competitors’ Liaison Officer at the famous festival.

The £10,000 instrument is being played in competition this week by Elise Liu, a diminutive 17-year-old from the Hong Kong Schools Music and Speech Association which sends two competitors to Llangollen every year. (more…)

Refugee’s labour of love is a record of iconic festival’s history

A tapestry created by a refugee from 1950s Czechoslovakia who became a Llangollen International Music Eisteddfod volunteer is to go on display at next year’s festival.

The framed tablecloth, decorated with the hundreds of embroidered signatures of former Eisteddfod visitors and competitors, hangs in the festival’s Press Office but retired language teacher, Darina Gaffin, of Froncysyllte, who herself volunteers as one of the eisteddfod’s Floral Team, wants to see her mother’s work go on public show. Nantgaredig children’s choir excel

Children of Carmarthenshire’s Ysgol Gynradd Nantgaredig produced a stunning performance competing at a major international music festival.

Under the baton of conductors Mair Jones and Ina Morgan, the choir took part in the Junior Children’s Choir competition at the Llangollen International Music Eisteddfod.

And although they didn’t come away with a win the children excelled in what was a very demanding competition competing against choirs from across Wales and England. (more…)

Children of Chesterfield’s St Peter and St Paul Chamber Choir produced a stunning performance competing at a major international music festival.

Children of Hereford Cathedral Junior School Choir produced a stunning performance competing at a major international music festival.

Under the baton of conductor Rachael Toolan the choir took part in the Junior Children’s Choir competition at the Llangollen International Music Eisteddfod.

And although they didn’t come away with a win the children excelled in what was a very demanding competition competing against choirs from across Wales and England. (more…)

Children of Sutton Coldfield’s Four Oaks Cluster Choir produced a stunning performance competing at a major international music festival.

Under the baton of conductors Richard Jefferies and Liz Birch, the choir took part in the Junior Children’s Choir competition at the Llangollen International Music Eisteddfod. (more…)
