The Chulada Choir of Chulalongkorn University Demonstration Secondary School was founded in 2004. Initially a mixed choir, Chulada has now switched to a senior children’s choir due to several factors.
Since its inception, Chulada has performed regularly at both school and public events, winning various international choral competitions, namely the Class C Gold Diploma in the Equal Voices (Junior Youth) category in the 2023 International Choral Festival “A Voyage of Songs,” the Level I Gold Diploma in the Youth Choirs of Mixed Voices in the first Lanna International Choir Competition 2016, four silver medals from the 7th and 8th World Choir Games in 2012 and 2014, the Silver Diploma from the 2018 Sing’n’Pray Kobe and the Class A Silver Diploma in the Mixed Voices Choir open category from the 2013 A Voyage of Songs (10th Anniversary).
Chulada has also won national competitions, such as First Prize Trophies from Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand in the Siam Paragon Christmas Carol Contest in 2007 and 2010, another First Prize Trophy from Her Royal Highness Princess Soamsawali of Thailand in the Friends in Need (of “PA”) Fair in 2009, the Second Runner Up award in the Siam Paragon Christmas Carol Contest 2006 and finally the First Runner Up award in the same program two years later. The choir is led by conductor Atichai Tragoondet and advisor Sarocha Asawaphatibun.

Where and how often do you rehearse? Every Monday and Wednesday after school.
Do you have any interesting stories about your group? We originally started out as a mixed choir, but because of Thailand’s gruelling college admission process, many high school students struggled to attend every rehearsal while also studying for university exams. Furthermore, most children who joined the choir were already girls, so eventually it was settled that a senior children’s choir was a better match.
How would you best describe your group? During the last 20 years we have been the only activity-based group that brought the school to the public eye the most, both performing and competing in choral events, or even receiving Youth Excellence Awards from the government. As stated in the choir’s name, we are the “Star of Chulalongkorn.”
