Biography:
Lady Cove is one of the leading choirs in Canada, acclaimed for artistry that combines technical polish with a clear cultural voice. Founded in 2003 in St John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, and named for the remote outport of Lady Cove, the ensemble gathers women from across the region into a shared practice of excellence, curiosity, and community care. Our work honours the musical traditions of Newfoundland and Labrador while engaging wide ranging repertoire from early music to contemporary Canadian commissions. We strive for a sound that is unified, flexible, and emotionally direct, and for concerts that invite audiences into story, resilience, joy, and reflection.
Now in its 23rd season, Lady Cove’s competitive and invitational record is exceptional. The choir is a two-time winner of CBC Radio’s national choral competition, earning first place in Equal Voices Female in 2006 and first place in Contemporary Music in 2008. In 2008, Lady Cove was the only Canadian choir invited to the Bela Bartok International Choir Competition in Debrecen, Hungary, where it won first place in the Equal Voices Female category. In 2011, the ensemble was selected as one of only 25 choirs worldwide to perform at the World Symposium on Choral Music in Puerto Madryn, Argentina. Lady Cove later earned two gold medals at the World Choir Games in Riga, Latvia, and continues to receive invitations to leading national and international conferences and festivals.
Kellie Walsh is Lady Cove’s founder and Artistic Director. She is also Artistic Director of Shallaway Youth Choir, and co-Artistic Director of HarbourVOICES International Festival of Collective Singing Traditions, and past president of Choral Canada. Her work has brought her across Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, the United States, South America, Europe, and Asia. From deep and proud roots in Newfoundland and Labrador, she has become known in Canada and internationally for embracing choral singing as an opportunity to explore leadership potential, build sociocultural identity, foster reciprocal, respectful cultural collaborations, and explore the transformative impact of choral singing and sharing on individuals and communities.
